ESTATE PROFILE

Nestled between the dramatic shoreline of the East Head and the beauty of the Outeniqua mountains lies the breathtaking Pezula Private Estate. Situated along the South Western Cape coast within the Knysna Municipal area it is situated to the west of the Noetzie river mouth and to the east of Knysna.

Located on South Africa's scenic Garden Route, it consists of 612 hectares and has nearly four kilometres of coastline. It is bordered by Noetzie beach and Sinclair Nature Reserve and has panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the magnificent indigenous forests and fynbos landscapes of the Southern Cape. It is close to the Pezula Championship Golf Course and the international Conrad Resort Hotel & Spa, with homeowners enjoying access to all facilities and amenities of the award-winning resort.

Pezula Private Estate was the vision of developers who purchased the 612-hectare property from the Parkes family in the 1990’s. Set atop the rugged cliffs of the Southern Cape coast, it had been used for commercial forestry for more than 70 years.

Amidst an ocean of exotic pine and eucalyptus trees, project planning commenced and approval was obtained in 2003. Pezula Private Estate, named after an African word meaning 'up high with the gods', was born. The vision of the developers was clear and driven by environmental thinking as opposed to business or purely money-making. With this in mind, 255 erven were identified, thus developing only 15% of the property available.

The primary goal was restoration of the land and the creation of a lifestyle estate. Following the philosophy of being in harmony with nature, the estate was designed to offer privacy and vast open spaces for the nature enthusiast with activities on offer including hiking, horse-riding and birding.

In 2003 the alien clearing and ecosystem rehabilitation commenced. Simultaneously infrastructure was installed, all the time being carried out under the strict control of an environmental management plan. The estate was developed in four phases. Phase 1 and Pezula Gardens commenced in 2003, followed by Phase 2 and the Field of Dreams in 2004 and Phase 3 late in 2004. Phase 4 is still to be completed. The initial house construction commenced on Phase 1 in 2004. Since then 62 homes have been completed on the estate.

Pezula Private Estate is one of the lowest density projects in South Africa. Plots vary in size from 3 000m2 to 33 000m2. Eighty-five percent of the property will remain pristine indigenous forest and rehabilitated coastal fynbos overlooking the sheltered beaches below the cliffs. When the Pezula Group purchased the cliff-top real estate that was to become Pezula Private Estate, much of it was covered in commercial pine and blue-gum forests. The company launched a massive rehabilitation programme to restore the land to its original pristine state. The huge success of this endeavour has been hailed internationally and recognised with a number of prestigious awards.

Pezula Private Estate was officially registered with CapeNature as part of The Knysna Coastal Conservancy, together with its surrounding areas. Comprising some 880 hectares of land, the conservancy incorporates all the different property usages on Pezula as well as the adjacent Pezula Golf Estate. The conservancy's main aims are the conservation of natural resources, the extension of a conservation area network, and the creation of increased public awareness regarding wise management of the natural environment.
